Once when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the field exhausted. He said to Jacob, "Let me eat some of that red stuff, because I'm exhausted." That is why he was also named Edom. Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright." "Look," Esau said, "I'm about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?" Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore to Jacob and sold his birthright to him. Then Jacob gave bread and lentil stew to Esau; he ate, drank, got up, and went away. So Esau despised his birthright. (Genesis 25: 29-34). There are numerous lessons to learn from these two people. But first and foremost, we have to learn that each one of them represents an economic system. Esau represents a hunter-eater system while Jacob represents a cultivator-multiplier system. These are the same systems portrayed by Jesus in the parable of talents in Matthew 25:14-30. One system consumes everything while another multiplies everything. These systems govern our world.
The hunter-eater system produces and sustains the poor while the cultivator-multiplier system produces and sustains the rich. It all goes down to the laws and principles you choose to obey and operate. Worthy to note is that the Church subscribes to the cultivator-multiplier system. This is what our Lord Jesus Christ commands. That's the essence of evangelism; multiplication of Kingdom citizens, and control of world's wealth and systems. More to that, what do you have that you are despising as nothing to you? In which ways do you think you are selling yourself so cheaply? It's time to do a self-assessment. Don't over exaggerate your need, because the end will be disastrous. That's what happened to Esau. Don't only look at temporal satisfaction, but more to the future and the likely consequences. Make informed decisions. Calculate your moves.
