DAILY BIBLE STUDY EXPOSITIONS - HEBREWS 2:1-18

with Elder Elico Manenji

✝️In this chapter, the Apostle shows that God’s law was announced to Moses by angels but salvation was made known to all humankind by his own Son, so the reason  people should turn to the gospel and believe it.

The testimony of Jesus Christ was first also bore by angels and His work was  confirmed by  miracles and wonders through the power of  the Holy Spirit which also accompanied the early apostolic preachings. The writer states that when. He became human, Christ was made a little lower than angels just as humans are a little lower than angels.

This human status of inferiority to angels was only temporary for God’s original purpose was that human beings should rule over all things.  But sin taking occasion of human weaknesses, mankind lost this authority and so needed to be saved from sin.

So Jesus came in sinful human flesh and for sin to offer redemption for all who believe. So when all things will be atoned for, Jesus Christ will return to His former status and authority, since being lower than angels was just a temporary position.

He died a shameful death but God exalted Him to the highest place in heaven so He could return to Adam his original God - given glory  before sin entered the world. Because of sin, it behooved Him to be like His brethren, to join in there suffering and bear fully the penalty of their rebellion so that they may share His glory.

1️⃣Hebrews 2:1-5: The Coming of Christ confirmed human salvation.

⏹️The coming of Christ into the world  brought a complete revelation of the gospel of the Son of God which humanity will do well to consider diligently and allow it not to slip out of our minds.

The Lord exhorted Israel, "Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and you turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them."

(Deuteronomy 11:16)

⏭️Christ is to be considered more because of His authority as God and because of His love and condescending to human level to instruct the sons of mankind who by their own fault and sin were cast into error and darkness.

The Apostle Paul says, "For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh;  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit" (Romans 8:3-4)

⏹️Christ is to be considered more because in Him is the fulness of the Godhead bodily and in Him are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

His coming is the final stage of the salvation offered to mankind and no farther revelation of God is to be expected in this world but what is already made by Jesus Christ and for this reason we need to attend and never to loose sight of such great love and mercy. The Apostle Paul says, *"See that you refuse not him that speaks. For if they escaped not who refused him that spoke on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaks from heaven"

(Hebrews 12:25)

2️⃣Hebrews 2:6-13: Christ was made like His brethren.

⏹️The most important question is " _What is man, that you are mindful of him? or the son of man that you visit him?"_ Adam is the generic term given to the first person at creation and he was then crowned with glory and honor, he was given dominion over all of God's creation. At his fall, all things of God fell and there was a general decay in the creation of God which He had pronounced very good at the beginning.

The prophet Zechariah says, "Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule on his throne; and he shall be a priest on his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them" (Zechariah 6:13)

⏭️The whole creation became sick, weak and wretched, so why should God remember  sick, weak and wretched beings, why would He condescend to their level by bringing Christ to suffer the same propensities of such sick, weak and wretched people.

The Apostle Paul says, "For the _(whole creation)_ earnest expectation of the creature waits for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who has subjected the same in hope"

(Romans 8:19-20)

⏹️We can't find an adequate response except we see the love and mercy of God at play in bringing back the honor and glory back to His creation for His first intended holy purpose.

The Apostle says, "Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now" (Romans 8:21-22)

⏭️God in mercy, made Christ to lower Himself to so great condescension that He should assume the fallen human nature and yet did no sin and overcame sin in a fallen nature where Adam in an unfallen nature failed and sinned. So Christ gave up His life to ransom them from the bitter pains and consequences of eternal death and yes, this is mercy and love indescribable and eternal.

So thus the Apostle Paul says, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified" (Romans 8:29-30)

3️⃣Hebrews 2:14-18:  Jesus was made flesh and blood to destroy the power of death.

⏹️So, Jesus being made of flesh and blood, assuming the human nature of mankind, made a little lower than angels, the ministering spirits took part of the same human nature to be

qualified to redeem humans by suffering and dying in their stead.

⏭️He himself likewise took part of the same, He became incarnate and thus He who was God and with God became man with men, that by the merits of His own death he could make atonement for sin and thus procure the Almighty energy of the Holy Spirit to counter work, or render useless and ineffectual all the operations, power and influence of sin that brings death in the world.

The prophet Isaiah said, "He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD has spoken it." (Isaiah 25:8)

⏹️For the reason of redemption, the reason of expiation of sin, for the purpose of

making propitiation or atonement for sins by His sacrifice, it was necessary or rather it behooved Him to be made like His brethren. It behooved Him to be a merciful high priest, it behooved Him to suffer infirmities and afflictions so that He might be  compassionate to the poor, fallen and afflicted humans who had been suffering under this burden of sin for too long.

The Apostle Paul says, "For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life" (Romans 5:10)

🅰️Appeal

The incarnation of Christ to a lower level is asserted by the phrase, _"Verily he took not upon him the nature of angels, but he took upon him the seed of Abraham. He took part of flesh and blood."_

So, truly He became man that he might die for God can not die and therefore He assumed another nature and state that  He might suffer death for every person and that He could readily take the legal law of sacrifices and offerings that God could accept as propitiation for sin and transgressions.

The Apostle John says, "And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world" (1John 2:2)

"Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins"

(1John 4:10)

 Amen!!!
