DAILY BIBLE STUDY EXPOSITIONS - TITUS 1:1-16

with Elder Elico Manenji

✝️The letter to Titus has much in common with First Timothy as both Epistles are concerned with order in the churches.

The distinction is that in First Timothy sound doctrine is more prominent but in Titus divine order for the local churches is to be maintained.

In this chapter, the Apostle speaks of hope, grace,  love, peace and order that should be maintained in the churches. He reminds Titus of the reason he left him at Crete and the qualifications of those who should be appointed as elders and bishops in the Church of God. He warns of false teachers especially of the circumcision and beastly character of the Cretans and how Titus was to deal with the pure, the impure, and false professors of religion.

1️⃣Titus 1:1-9: Salutations and qualifications for ordination to ministry.

⏹️Ministers of the gospel are servants of God and Christ, they should copy the life of their Master for Christ came into the world not to be served but to minister and serve as He offered salvation to every person who believes.

The Apostle says, "But now having been freed from sin, and having become enslaved to God, you have your fruit resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life"  (Romans 6:22).

⏭️ God can not lie, He has made a promise of eternal life by His Son, Jesus Christ before the world began, so Christ is the Head and Surety of a people even when mankind was not yet created.

The prophet Isaiah says, "Behold, my God is my Savior; I will trust in Him, and not be afraid; for the Lord is my glory and my praise, and has become my salvation" (Isaiah 12:2).

⏹️God has made this promise of  salvation simply by the preaching of the Word which is the ordinance of God by which ministers are called to serve and to be masters.

The Scriptures say, "God is a man that He should waver, nor as a son of man that He should be threatened; shall He say and not perform? Shall He speak and not keep His word?" (Numbers 23:19).

⏭️So, if the gospel is served, it will perfect order and holiness amongst the people as long as the Elders,

Presbyters, the Bishops ordained are blameless, sober, just, holy and temperate and of good character worthy their calling.

The Apostle says, "In order that you may become blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine as light bearers in the world" (Philippians 2:15).

⏭️Ministers, elders and bishops are therefore to teach and instruct sound doctrine so that those who speak against God may be silenced by their character and the truthfulness of the gospel as seen in their lives.

The Apostle says, "holding fast to the faithful word as he was taught, that he may be able to exhort by sound doctrine, and to convince those who oppose it" (Titus 1:9).

2️⃣Titus 1:10-16: Warning against false teachers and the character of the Cretans.

⏹️The world is full of vain talkers who are deceptive who are a hindrance to the gospel commission, whose passion are like evil beasts, whose intentions are to tear down the faith of those who have believed.

The Psalmist says, "Turn away from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it"(Psalm 34:14).

⏭️Such people are liars, fornicators and have an adulterated truth, selfish, vain and heretical, indifferent to in God’s matters, whose intentions are to turned away people from the image of God which stood in truth and holiness.

The wiseman says, "Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but he that deals faithfully is accepted by Him"(Proverbs 12:22).

⏹️The Word of God calls people to purity of mind, a pure heart becomes the centre of attraction by which falsehood is repelled as the mind and conscience are governing powers which should never be  polluted by sin.

The Apostle says, "For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intentions of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12).

🅰️Appeal

Ministers must be meek, gentle and patient towards all men as becoming their Master, Jesus Christ.

They should not given to wine, for  there is no greater reproach on a minister than to be a wine-bibber, one who loves it and gives himself undue liberty to drink strong drink till it inflames them.

Ministers should be consistent to their calling and election, seasonable, moderate, not lovers of pleasure more than God.

They are to love God and the people God has sent to them, they should not be masters but servants of the people, otherwise they will be disqualified for every good work.

The prophet Isaiah says, "13 And the Lord has said, “This people draw near to Me with their mouth, and they honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me; and in vain do they worship Me, teaching the commandments and doctrines of men" (Isaiah 2913).

Amen!!!
