Woman Donates 14 Pints of Blood

They say blood is thicker than water.

While others find it difficult to donate 500ml of water, this Borrowdale woman has donated 14 pints of blood.

It all started in 2018 and since then she has not looked back.

She donates 1 pint of blood every quarter and has remained very healthy.

This is the story of a 40 year old successful chicken breeder, ZBC journalist and farmer,  Maria Nyamaropa of Borrowdale Brooke.

"My mum fell sick in 2017 and 2018 she was diagnosed with cancer and the battle was real.

"I would accompany her for chemotherapy sessions that would took more than 5 hours.

"So during those hours waiting for the session one day my muroora asked me to accompany her to National Blood Service Zimbabwe for a blood donation and I did.

"She later forced me to donate as at first ndaitya." Said Maria.

For blood donor Maria it took confidence to try again, so she went back to the blood transfusion centre in Harare.

"It was more chilling when I was supposed to go for the following donation hence I had not received any communication but iye akatumirwa message, ndakatya as I felt maybe they had discovered that my blood was not suitable.

"I had to abandon the journey as I could not go and ask if I was still eligible for donations.

"After some few months of waiting I again gained confidence and went back, after consultations they notified that message was not sent as there was no phone number, it was a relief and from that day I do donate wholeheartedly.

"I was told that the benefits of being a donor besides assisting those desperately in need of blood, in the event of a close relative who might need blood, the fact that I am a donor the patient will get priority.

"There was a time I tried driving this initiative to friends but it seems vanhu havadi havo." Asserted Maria.

Maria Nyamaropa a God - fearing mother of two appeals to all Christians to make effort to donate blood as this will help them or their relatives when need arises.

Maria says she owes it to her mother and she does this in her memory.

"She remains an inspiration to me." She said.

As the ancient Church hymn goes, 'Power in the blood' Maria urges fellow Church members to get empowered to be blood donors.
