Light On Tuesday

EVEN A RELATIVE DESERVES TO BE PAID

_Laban said to him, "You shouldn't work for me without pay just because we are relatives. Tell me how much your wages should be."_ (Genesis 29:15)

What a fair employer and relative Laban was! He wanted a perfect balance between relation and business.

Many often choose to put more emphasis on personal gain than the welfare of their employee, whether relative or not.

Laban displays a rare combination of family and labour relations.

It is godly to take care of our relatives, to help them live a comfortable life.

It is also noble to employ your relative, provided there is a clear line between business and relation.

However one must not always expect to be employed by a relative, and neither must any employer expect cheap or free labour from a relative.

Every worker deserves to be paid accordingly.

Laban called Jacob to negotiate his payment as he was going to be working for him. He never wanted to take advantage of Jacob's needy situation.

Be encouraged to maintain good labour relations and practices, even with your relatives.

Do not wait until your employee begins to complain.

A mutual agreement is needed right at the onset.

Amen.
