Pulling down the high places

27 January 2022

By Rev Dr Kenneth Mtata

Today's readings:

Psalm 71:1-6; 2 Chronicles 34:1-7; Acts 10:44-48

Verse of the day:

"In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his father David. In his twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of high places, Asherah poles and idols" (2 Chronicles 34:3).

Unlike king Jehoiakim who rejected God's word, king Josiah sought the Lord. God's word convicted him with so much power that  he began major reforms. Among the many sins Josia was convicted to address was IDOLATRY.

Idolatry is having other gods apart from God. One's God is anything that you LOVE above everything else, you FEAR above everything else and you TRUST above everything else.

Your God is that has ULTIMATE claim over your life.

When people are filled with the Holy Spirit, they are totally freed from other gods. They  are liberated to truly LOVE, FEAR and TRUST God and to serve God's people with joy.

One major effect of God's word when accepted is to reveal God as one who has totally loved us and has totally given himself to us. Such revelation leads to a rejection of all other things or beings that want to make claims over our lives. In this way, the word leads to the pulling down of alters and destroy the different idols in our lives.

Currently, individuals, families, churches and our nation are suffering from idols of popularity, exaggerated fear and misplaced trust.

We need to pull down these Idols so that we enjoy the full outpouring of the Spirit of God.

May it begin with me and you!!

Prayer:

God, may you speak to us afresh so that the alters and idols in our lives, families, churches and nation may fall. In Jesus' name we pray. AMEN.
