_"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit it is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits"_ (Matt 7:15-20). The life of inner righteousness is harder than the shallow, performance-based hypocrisy modeled by so many. Here Jesus tells His followers to beware of false prophets. This can refer specifically to those who claim to be literal "prophets," or leaders. It also applies, in general, to those who make false religious claims. Such people may put on the appearance of innocence or brotherhood. In truth, they are as deceptive and dangerous as hungry wolves wearing sheep skin. There is always a market for the false prophets because people don't want to hear the truth.
In this statement, Jesus is pointedly identifying those who oppose Him - those who lead people along the wide path of destruction - as false prophets hungry to devour an easily-led people. The most prominent examples of these, for Jesus' original audience, were the religious leaders of Israel. Those men will end up accusing Jesus of falseness and blasphemy. He is warning His listeners ahead of time that those men are the false prophets. They "devour" in the sense that they rely on the continued fear-driven submission of the people to maintain their own power and position. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ but their own body and satan, and by sugarcoated words and speeches deceive the hearts of the innocent. They make you proud, they appeal to your ego, they are evil, they are adulterous, they strengthen the hands of the evildoers, but they say what you want to hear, and display what you want to see, therein you are trapped. Flee such that deny the power of Christ, that manipulate and plunder your life taking it in the direction of even eternal destruction.
