*UNDERSTANDING THE ACTS AND WORDS OF JESUS CHRIST (114)*

_"Whoever loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me"_ (Matthew 10:37).

It is easier to misunderstand this verse. But this verse is not saying loving your family, friends, etc. is wrong in the sight of God. It doesn't mean commit all your time to church duties, having little or no time for your family. It doesn't say hold your pastor or church in high esteem and disregard your parents. It doesn't mean making your family happy is wrong, nor does it say spending quality time with your family is abhorred by God. You are supposed to love your mother, father, children, husband, wife, etc. so dearly. But this is where you cross the line: If you love your mother to the point where you would listen to her over the Word of God, that is wrong and it would render you unworthy of Christ. If you would do something to please your father, though it displeases God, that's wrong.

Jesus is demanding His rightful place in the hearts of His people. They must love Him more than all others and demonstrate that is true if forced to make a choice. This does not change Scripture's demand that children honor their parents (Ephesians 6:2) and that parents provide for their children (Ephesians 6:4). Jesus does not say "Do not love" those other people - what He says is that we ought to love and prioritize God more.

Loving others is the second greatest commandment, but it is behind the first: _to love God with everything we have_ (Matthew 22:34-40). In making this statement, Jesus continues to make the claim and proof that He is God. Love and obedience to Him must come before obedience to any other person or group (Acts 5:29). The fear of God, one's relationship with God, and walking by God's Word should be held in high esteem than family ties. This is all that Jesus wanted to say in Matthew 10:37.
