*UNDERSTANDING THE ACTS AND WORDS OF JESUS CHRIST (131)*
_"Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light."_ (Matthew 11:29-30). A yoke is a wooden device used to harness the working power of animal, especially oxen. These could be made for a single animal, or to combine the power of several. Jewish people described living under obedience to the Law as having a yoke upon them. In Jesus' time, the Pharisees made that load even heavier by adding manmade requirements and regulations on top of the Law of Moses (Mat 23:4). Jesus had just declared that He knows God the Father and that He can reveal Him to whomever He chooses. Then He invited His listeners to come to Him and take His yoke, to commit to Him and put themselves under His authority. And He promised rest to those who do this.
The implication is to allow Jesus to put His own yoke on us, the way a farmer would put one on his livestock. It means giving Jesus control and letting Him direct our efforts. The work He has won't be difficult. He wants us to learn from Him. By making this statement, Jesus is not offering freedom from commitment. His yoke is still a yoke: it still comes with demands from a holy God. Obedience to the God we love is not burdensome. Jesus carried the ultimate burden of our sin for us and provided power in the Holy Spirit for us to carry out His will.
The meekness, humility, and lowliness of Christ appear in His assumption of human nature; in His subjection to His Heavenly Father; in the whole of His deportment and conversation among men; in His submission to the ordinance of baptism; in the whole course of His obedience, and in His sufferings and death: and He is to be imitated herein, by all His followers, who may learn many excellent things from His example, as well as from His doctrine. Though He was so great a person, yet condescended to perform every duty with readiness and cheerfulness.
*EXCELLENCE KEY* 🗝️
_Jesus Christ set us an excellent example, that we should tread in His footsteps, and walk even as He walked. There's no any example so worthy of our imitation as His._
