_"… I will build My Church, and the gates of hades shall not prevail against it"_ (Matthew 16:18b). In Biblical times, the city gates were the center of commerce and government. The city council would meet at the city gates, and many commercial transactions would take place. These gates were the entrance point to the fortified cities in ancient times where councils held. In this regard, one sound interpretation from a Biblical standpoint would be that "the gates of hades" represents a combination of hell's policy and power. The meaning behind this verse is that the strength and plots of the devil and his demons and human agents shall not prevail against believers in Jesus Christ. Does this mean that we won't suffer persecution then? Not at all. Jesus said in Matthew 24:9, _"Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for My sake."_
Even though the Church will and already does suffer persecution, we are on the winning side as we are confident of our eternal destiny. That serpent satan is delusional in thinking that he can overcome God's faithful Church. But Scripture reassures us that nothing, including the gates of hell will prevail against the Church. We are eternally covered by the precious blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ, and even if we are persecuted and killed, we know that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit. We shouldn't fear those who can kill the body, but the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell (Mat 10:28).
In another sense, think about the picture of a gate, standing tall and bold. Gates fortify; are both defensive and offensive systems. They're there to hold their ground. Get this, hell is not primarily on the offensive. The Church is. The Church is marching into all the hells in this world, ready to reclaim every square inch for Christ. And when we storm the gates of hell, Christ promises we cannot fail. We will prevail. It's time to put the devil on the run. It's time to save the souls and destroy strongholds. It's time to reclaim this world for Christ. Let's much forward, boldly and victorious in the name of Jesus.
