_"This place is a wilderness, and it is already late. Send the crowds away so they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves." "They don't need to go away," Jesus told them. "You give them something to eat." "But we only have five loaves and two fish here," they said to Him. "Bring them here to Me," He said... Everyone ate and was filled. Then they picked up 12 baskets full of leftover pieces!_ (Mat 14:15-20). Hitherto Christ had bestowed His whole attention on feeding souls, but now he includes within His duties as a Shepherd the care even of their bodies. And in this way He confirms His own saying, that to those who seek the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness, all other things will be added (Mat 6:33).
Perceiving that His disciples were anxious, He intended to make trial of their obedience and faith by giving them an injunction which at first sight appeared to be absurd; for, as no provisions were at hand, there was reason to wonder why Christ was making arrangements that resembled a feast. Jesus was so intentional with this act. The loaves were broken in His hand but multiplied in the disciples' hands, that they might thus be the ministers of Christ's divine power; for as if it had been of small importance that they should be eyewitnesses, Christ determined that His power should be handled by them. For such a high amount of money required to purchase bread barely sufficient for procuring a meal to the multitudes, the disciples are entitled to no small praise for their obedience, when they implicitly comply with the command of Christ to distribute the bread, and leave the multiplication result to Jesus.
This miracle took place in Jewish territory, on the western side of the division of the River Jordan flowing into the Sea of Galilee. It was a sign to Israel that the Messiah was able to feed all people even when there was no food. The fact that there were twelve baskets left over indicates that He could meet the needs of all twelve tribes of Israel. It was a lesson to the disciples and a message to Israel.
