Mark 10:45
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Jesus is the perfect example of service to others. The King of kings not only came to earth to save us, He came to help those in need. If Jesus wasn’t in ministry, He was in mission to others.
Think back to a time when someone has taken care of you. Maybe a time when you were not well, or a time when you were just not yourself and felt overwhelmed or sad. When someone came with no agenda but to be with you, it gave you comfort. Things felt better.
Jesus reminded the disciples that He had hand picked them not as a group to take care of themselves, they were in a group to go out and help others. Part of this mission was not just in delivering the gospel news, but also to be the hands of feet of care, concern, compassion and empathy-the same characteristics as Jesus. Go where you are needed and where you see need.
James and John blew that teaching at one point, when the asked Jesus for seats of honor beside Him in heaven. Jesus said to them that to be great in the kingdom one must go out and serve from where they are NOW.
Our life could be so different if we put in place acts of helping others instead of looking for people to help us. In the Christian mindset, it’s about helping others and tending to them so that their life will reflect that they are worthy and important to be worried about. That begins with us as we reflect the character of Jesus through us.
If we look to ourselves and our requests to God through Jesus, are we praying mostly for ourselves and our needs, or are we the intercessor for others and their needs?
How might you pray to God from here on out and ask Him to show you how you can serve the people around the community in a way that God knows you are able?
Good has plans for everyone, even if one is not able to get out and about. God can still use you. Prayer is essential to find out how to serve, and to sit patiently and quietly for God to answer that prayer.
We are called to serve. Not to be served.
Amen.
