Promoting peace and social cohesion through Sports
The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) recently facilitated a Sport for Peace Netball and Soccer Tournament in Mwacheta ward 16 in Chipinge district. The event, which drew multitudes of community members from 3 wards, mostly young people, was co-facilitated by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development. Sport is an important tool for promoting respect, tolerance, cohesion. These are useful building blocks for social capital, itself a vital ingredient to increasing opportunities for economic empowerment. The lack of economic opportunities was identified as a major driver towards the scourge of flight of young people in Chipinge, mostly to neighboring South Africa, often illegally, thus enlarging and perpetuating a vicious cycle of poverty and vulnerability.
Speaking during the event, Reverend Mpunza from the United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe (UCCZ) shared word from Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 emphasizing the importance of upholding the values of peace and social cohesion.
The ZCC is implementing the Reducing Causes of Flight Program in 3 communities in Chipinge district with support from Evangelical Church of Wutternburg (ECW) Act for Peace Canadian Foodgrains Bank UNICEF Zimbabwe The United Church of Canada
