Church Launches Child Protection Awareness Campaign

September 10th, 2024

The Youth and Children's  Ministries Department has this morning launched a child protection awareness campaign to ensure the safety and well-being of children.

The campaign aims to educate the public on the importance of safeguarding children from abuse, exploitation, and neglect.

According to UNICEF, 1.3 million children in Zimbabwe need child protection services, including psychosocial support and protection from sexual exploitation.

The Salvation Army's child protection policy is based on international human rights instruments, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Chief Secretary Colonel Tineyi Mambo said boys should also be mainstreamed in the campaign as there is a tendency to focus on girls only.

The policy recognizes that children have the right to be protected from inhuman treatment, danger, and violence, and that they deserve the highest standard of health and medical care attainable.

The campaign will focus on creating and maintaining safe environments, training children, youths, local officers, company guards, officers and school teachers to keep children safe, responding to child protection concerns, and providing care and support for victims and their families.

TYS Major Elvis Chimombe told Salvationist online that from tomorrow, himself, the Territorial Children's Ministries Secretary Captain Sikhulile Chimombe and the Territorial Child Protection champions will traverse the Territory with the campaign.

The Salvation Army urges everyone to become positive role models and report any concerns or suspicions of child abuse to the designated child protection contact or the police. - Salvationist online
