Church Spearheads Climate Change Adaptation Awareness

“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters”- Epictetus

Shifting rainfall patterns and long dry spells during critical periods during the summer cropping season in most parts of the country have left many households susceptible to drought.

ZCC, with support from its partners Canadian Foodgrains Bank and The United Church of Canada are assisting communities in Gutu and Bikita districts to be better prepared for these eventualities and to adapt their agriculture and livelihood activities to the changing conditions. Recently a ZCC team led by the Humanitarian Services and Diakonia Director Ms Maria T. Dendere was in Masvingo Province for inception meetings with Masvingo Provincial and district stakeholders  where they formally introduced the Scaling Up Resilience Program, a new initiative to boost the resilience of 1300 farmers in the two districts.

With additional support from Canadian Foodgrains Bank  and The United Church of Canada , ZCC will also roll out a Food Assistance intervention to compliment government El Nino drought response efforts. The program will address critical food consumption gaps among 12,000 individuals during the lean season. ZCC will also partner with Tearfund to implement another El Nino response program in Bikita targeting households mainly with support to improving access to safe water.
