Christian-Based Support for Climate Resilience...

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) and the Canadian Food Grains Bank (CFGB) have strengthened their partnership in the fight against food insecurity and climate shocks during a recent learning visit to Bikita District, Zimbabwe. The delegation from CFGB had the opportunity to engage with the local community, furthering their collaboration to address critical issues of hunger and resilience in the region.

“We are deeply grateful for this opportunity to witness the work being done on the ground,” said a CFGB representative. “Our partnership with the Zimbabwe Council of Churches continues to grow, and it is through our shared Christian values that we can create lasting change.”

The visit began with a productive courtesy meeting with the Bikita District Development Coordinator, setting the stage for deeper engagement between CFGB, ZCC, and the local government. This dialogue opened the door to more comprehensive support for local communities impacted by food insecurity and climate shocks.

During the visit, the CFGB team was eager to engage directly with project participants. They visited communities in Bikita and Gutu districts, where ZCC is implementing two important projects—Food Assistance and Scaling up Resilience. These initiatives, supported by CFGB, are designed to tackle the dual challenges of hunger and climate change by providing immediate food relief and building long-term resilience in vulnerable communities.

“We are witnessing incredible efforts on the part of local farmers, who are adapting to the changing climate and learning new ways to build their resilience,” shared a member of the CFGB delegation. “Through the partnership with ZCC, these communities are not only receiving food assistance but are also learning how to grow more resilient and sustainable food systems.”

The delegation was particularly moved by the commitment of the communities, who are using innovative agricultural practices to adapt to unpredictable weather patterns and enhance food security. The support from CFGB and ZCC has provided these communities with the tools they need to withstand the challenges posed by climate change while strengthening their ability to produce food locally.

A ZCC representative emphasized the Christian foundation of these projects, stating, “Our faith calls us to serve the most vulnerable, and through these projects, we are living out that calling. We are committed to empowering these communities, helping them to become more self-reliant and resilient in the face of adversity.”

Through this collaborative effort, ZCC and CFGB are demonstrating how faith-based organizations can be a powerful force in addressing global issues such as hunger, poverty, and climate change. By combining compassion with practical solutions, they are bringing hope to many families in Zimbabwe.

As the visit concluded, the CFGB delegation expressed their deep appreciation for the work of ZCC and the opportunity to be part of this impactful mission. “This partnership is rooted in our shared Christian values of love, stewardship, and community,” one CFGB delegate reflected. “It is truly inspiring to see the difference we are making together.”

With a focus on sustainability and resilience, ZCC and CFGB’s ongoing efforts in Bikita and Gutu districts serve as a model for faith-based organizations working to alleviate food insecurity and build stronger, more resilient communities in the face of climate challenges.
