Final Send-off For Fr Walter Nyatsanza

On Friday, the 4th of April 2025, a Mass was celebrated for the burial of Rev Fr Walter Nyatsanza. This mass was celebrated by the Rt Rev Bishop Raymond Mupandasekwa, and graced by the Archbishop Robert Christopher Ndhlovu, Bishop Rudolf Nyandoro and Bishop Emeritus Michael Dixon Bhasera. Priests, religious and laity from across Zimbabwe were also present, despite the constant showers and drizzles of the day.

In his homily, Rev Fr Samson Mutsvanga, spoke of how Fr Nyatsanza was a preacher who was able to speak to all people of different ages, backgrounds and situations, even willing to speak on topics many would avoid, such as politics and issues on the ground. He further pointed out that there is need to preach the gospel everywhere in every season, even if, in the process, it may get you hated and segregated. He called the gathered congregation to consider that, so far two priests have passed on either going to Mass or celebrating it, and that, theologically, these represent the reality that Jesus conquered death. By dying in such a way, they show the power of the Lord over what we tend to fear. He concluded by saying that, the ultimate show of obedience for every Christian, is a death rooted and centred on God himself, allowing God to call us and our willingness to pass from this life to the next.

The final commendation was said by the Very Rev Kenneth Muguti, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Harare. The burial rite was said by the Very Rev Simon Mavhiya, Vicar General of the Diocese of Gweru.
